Research
I work on the comparative politics of developing countries, with particular attention to ethnic politics and group-based inequality, state fragility, governance, democracy and democratization, and sub-Saharan African politics.
Much of my current work focuses on group-based inequality, in particular for groups defined in ethnic terms. At UNU-WIDER, I am the focal point for a research effort supported under the 2014-2018 work program on "The Politics of Group-based Inequality: Measurement, Implications, and Possibilities for Change." I have various single- and co-authored papers/articles in progress under this project, along with four edited journal special issues (see also Gisselquist 2013, McDoom and Gisselquist 2016). Other ongoing projects address:
- the impact of ethnic divisions on governance and public goods provision (e.g., Gisselquist 2014; Gisselquist, Leiderer, and Nino-Zarazua 2016);
- aid and institution-building in fragile states (e.g., Gisselquist 2014, 2015a, 2015b; Gisselquist and Tarp forthcoming 2019);
- the use of various methods -- in particular experimental methods and comparative methods -- to study governance and government performance (e.g., Gisselquist and Nino-Zarazua 2015; Gisselquist 2014a, 2014b); and
- governance measurement and the use of indexes of governance and development (e.g., Rotberg and Gisselquist 2008, 2009; Gisselquist 2012, 2014), as well as issues of data for development (e.g., Canelas and Gisselquist 2018b).
